Voted Best Photography Studio | Ajax-Pickering Readers' Choice Award Winner 2017

As a long-time resident of Durham Region (I’ve lived in the Durham Region since immigrating to Canada at the age of two), I've always looked forward to receiving the weekly editions of the local News Advertiser newspaper. As a young child, I loved looking through the store flyers, eagerly planning my Christmas gift list.

As a young adult, the weekly paper helped me keep up to date with what was going on around me while I was busy balancing life with work. As a mother and wife, the flyers were invaluable in helping me figure out a budget-friendly weekly meal plan.

And now, as a business owner and newborn photographer in Durham Region, I’m keenly aware of the Readers’ Choice Awards, an annual voting process where residents of Durham Region identify their favourite businesses…everything from electricians and plumbers, restaurants and dentists, to, well...photographers!

When I first picked up a camera eight years ago, it was to capture the incredible beauty and wildlife of the Serengeti while on safari with my handsome husband. The images were amazing (or so I thought at the time), and I remember thinking wow, if I can take images this good when I don’t know what I’m doing (I seriously had no clue), I wonder what it could be if I put some effort into learning? This happened to coincide with the birth of the first baby in our family in more than 27 years. When my great-nephew arrived, it only made sense for me to pick up my camera and capture images of him while he was so tiny.

When I look back on those first images of this beautiful little man, I cringe a little inside. He was such a gorgeous baby, but from a technical perspective, I knew nothing about posing newborns, using correct angles and lighting, or - most importantly - newborn safety. But those images were “good enough” for his proud parents, and when others saw them, they asked me to capture their newborns. Juggling this ongoing learning and practice along with a full-time career in downtown Toronto kept me busy, but when my corporate job was downsized a few years ago, it presented a wonderful opportunity for me to become a newborn photographer, full-time!

And so it began!

We officially launched Waterson Photography in 2012 and have never looked back. We now serve clients from Toronto and across Durham Region, with many coming to our photography studio from as far as Kitchener-Waterloo, Kleinberg, Brampton, Woodbridge, Aurora and Newcastle! While our focus is on photographing newborn babies, we also capture births and beautiful baby bumps. We also love to see "our" babies return to celebrate their first birthdays with formal portraits and the occasional cake smash.

We were pleasantly surprised, and incredibly humbled, to learn that we won the 2017 award for Best Photography Studio by Readers' Choice Awards, Ajax-Pickering. We were told by the newspaper’s publishers that the competition was fierce, and that we should be proud of this achievement. And you know what? WE ARE!!! But we couldn’t have done this without YOU!

Thank you from the bottom of our hearts, for trusting us enough to create beautiful art with your little people!
